Pioneer Bible Translators

Often times we fail to recognize that the world is a lot bigger than our daily experience. It’s easy to do—we think that the sun rises and sets with the local football team, or with the price of gas here in the United States. We get all caught up in our weather, our economy, the construction on our street. It’s not bad to be locally minded but it’s so easy to forget that there’s a big world out there. In Jesus’ parting words to the disciples in Acts he called them to be locally minded (Jerusalem) and globally minded (the ends of the earth). I suppose he would give us the same charge.
In November there are two events that can stretch our minds beyond our local existence. Today, Jeff Holland will be sharing with us the sad reality that there are language groups that do not have a Bible in their native tongue. While we have access to the English Bible in many translations, there are some people who don’t even have the privilege of even one translation. Jeff works with Pioneer Bible Translators, an organization whose vision is “transformed lives through God's word in every language.” All are invited to “an hour for the Bile-less” from 3:30-4:30 this afternoon in the fellowship hall.
Next Sunday, November 8, is the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. In our local world “persecuted church” seems to be an oxymoron but there are millions of Christians around the world suffering because of their faith. There are places where the practice of Christianity can result in beheading or stoning. In China, 90% of Christians meet underground to avoid government regulations and restrictions. It is not uncommon in some places to meet with Christians under a great threat of danger. As global brothers and sisters in Christ we will set aside some time next Sunday in intercessory prayer for the strength of those persecuted and for the souls of the persecutors. Richard Chowning, an experienced missionary who also works with several mission agencies, will lead our thoughts and prayers.
So stretch your minds the next two weeks and think and act globally.
